An annual to 45cm. The whole plant has a fragrant sweet smell.
Grown usually for its aromatic seeds, which can be eaten raw or
used as a flavouring in raw or cooked foods such as soups, pies,
bread and cakes. The oil extracted from the seed is also used in
toiletries, medicines and to flavour liqueurs. Fresh cut leaves
which have a sweet aniseed flavour are added to soups, salads and
stews. When adding to cooked dishes, only add the leaves for the
last few minutes of the cooking or the flavour will be lost. Used
since Roman times as an aid to digestion
