Lilacs are deciduous ornamental shrubs growing to 2.5 to 3m high and wide. Flowers can vary from single to double and come in various shades of mauve, purple, pink, lavender, lilac, blue, reddish purple and white. Lilacs are a delightful addition to any garden, with their exquisite fragrance permeating through the garden. Lilac flowers also make a wonderful cut flower.
Lilacs grow best in warm temperate to cool areas with cool winters and will tolerate frosts and extreme cold. Preferring well drained soil, rich in organic matter in an open position with full sun but will tolerate part shade. They thrive in slightly alkaline soils and will benefit from applications of lime in autumn
